Mathematician Nikhil Srivastava and 2 others selected for 'AMS's Cipriani Foyce' Prize

  • Nikhil Srivastava, a renowned Indian-American mathematician who teaches at the University of California, Berkeley, has been named a co-recipient of the American Mathematical Society's inaugural Ciprian Foias Prize in Operator Theory (AMS).
  • Professor Srivastava is one of the recipients, along with Adam Marcus and Daniel Spielman.
  • Marcus is a professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, where he holds the Chair of Combinatorial Analysis.
  • Spielman is a statistician, data scientist, and mathematician who is also the Sterling Professor of Computer Science.
  • The award will be presented to Professor Srivastava and his colleagues on January 5, 2022, at the Joint Mathematics Convention in Seattle, which is billed as the world's largest mathematics meeting.
  • Prof. Srivastava has already received three major awards: the George Polya Prize in 2014, the Held Prize in 2021, and the Ciprian Foias Prize this year.
  • The award was established in 2020 to honour Ciprian Foias, an outstanding professor of Operator Theory and fluid dynamics.
  • The current prize is $5,000, which is awarded every three years.
