Jharkhand passes Bill to prevent mob violence, lynching

  • The Jharkhand Assembly passed the Prevention of Mob Violence and Mob Lynching Bill, 2021, with the goal of providing "effective protection" of constitutional rights and preventing mob violence in the state.
  • Jharkhand is the third state, after Rajasthan and West Bengal, to pass such legislation.
  • The Bill was introduced in the Assembly by state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Alamgir Alam, who stated that Bill's goal is to provide "effective security" to people, protect constitutional rights, and create a deterrent to mob violence.
  • The Prevention of Mob Violence and Mob Lynching Bill, 2021, provides for jail terms ranging from three years to life imprisonment and fines of up to Rs 25 lakh for those involved in mob lynchings that result in "injury or death" of an individual.
