INS Vela commissioned into the Indian Navy

  • The Indian Navy has commissioned INS Vela, its fourth stealth Scorpene-class submarine under Project 75.
  • The introduction of the submarine will improve the Navy's combat capability.
  • Project 75 entails the construction of six Scorpene-class submarines.
  • Three of these submarines have already been commissioned namely Kalvari, Khanderi, and Karanj.
  • Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, based in Mumbai, collaborated with the M/s Naval Group of France to construct the submarine.
  • The previous incarnation of INS Vela was commissioned on August 31, 1973, and it served the nation admirably for 37 eventful years before being decommissioned on June 25, 2010.
  • Vela is a diesel-electric-powered attack submarine. It has a length of 67.5 meters and a height of 12.3 meters.
