  • Merriam-Webster has named vaccine the word of the year for 2021.
  • In comparison to 2020, the word "vaccine" saw a 601 percent increase in definition lookups during the year.
  • According to Peter Skolovsky, editor-at-large of Merriam-Webster, the word vaccine per day has been used too many times in the data in 2021.
  • The term vaccine is thought to be derived from the Latin word vaccina. Vaccina is derived from the Latin word Vaccinus, which means "from the cow." 
  • Fat (Vacca) is the Latin word for cow, which is similar to the Sanskrit word fat.
  • Merriam-Webster declared the word "Pandemic" as the Word of the Year in the year 2020.
