ACC Extends Terms of Cabinet Secretary and Home Secretary

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has granted a one-year extension to Cabinet Secretary Dr. T.V. Somanathan and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan. The Ministry of Personnel notified the decision to ensure continuity in key administrative and internal security roles amid a possible wider bureaucratic reshuffle.
Somanathan, a 1987 TN-cadre IAS officer appointed in August 2024, will now serve till 30 August 2027. Mohan, a 1989 Sikkim-cadre officer who took charge in August 2024, will continue till 22 August 2027. The extensions were given by relaxing Fundamental Rule 56(d) and related AIS retirement rules, applicable to top posts including Defence, Foreign, IB and R&AW secretaries.
