The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) is celebrated worldwide every year on April 6. Proclaimed by the United Nations in 2013, the day has been observed annually since 2014. It marks the opening of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.
The 2026 theme, “Sport: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers”, highlights sport’s power to promote unity, inclusion, and global cooperation across cultures and conflicts. The International Olympic Committee (IOC), through its Olympism365 strategy, is supporting over 550 social impact programmes in 189 countries, focusing on health, education, and social change.
This year’s observance also spotlights the upcoming Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, the first Olympic event to be hosted in Africa, emphasizing youth engagement and regional development. Sport continues to play a vital role in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including gender equality, mental health, and social inclusion.
