World Lion Day is observed annually on 10 August to highlight lion conservation.
Lions are apex predators and play an important role in maintaining ecosystem balance.
Major threats include habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, prey depletion, poaching, climate change and diseases.
India is significant because it hosts the remaining wild Asiatic lions, mainly in Gujarat’s Gir landscape.
Project Lion was launched in 2020 for long-term conservation of Asiatic lions.
