The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the Census of India 2027 with an estimated outlay of ₹11,718.24 crore. The nationwide exercise will be conducted in two phases, covering every household to generate updated demographic and socio-economic data. For the first time, the census will be largely digital, using mobile applications and online systems, with provisions for self-enumeration, marking a major step toward modern, technology-driven governance.
