Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti 2026

India is celebrating the 165th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore on May 7, 2026 (May 9 as per Bengali calendar). Known as Gurudev, Tagore was a poet, philosopher, educationist, and composer who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for Gitanjali. He composed India’s national anthem Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh’s Amar Sonar Bangla. He founded Visva-Bharati University and renounced his knighthood after Jallianwala Bagh. Celebrations include Rabindra Sangeet, poetry recitals, and cultural events, especially in West Bengal.
