On 12 June 2026, the Odisha government announced free education from Kindergarten to Postgraduate level in all government institutions. Building on existing free education up to Class 10, the new policy will extend to higher secondary, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels, benefiting over 10 lakh students.
The higher education component is estimated to cost ₹30 crore annually. The scheme applies only to government institutions. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi made the announcement during a press conference marking two years of the BJP government. Modalities are being prepared for cabinet approval.
