President Droupadi Murmu has given assent to the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Act, 2026 (anti-conversion law).
The Act becomes enforceable only after the state government issues an official notification.
It bans conversions through coercion, fraud, misrepresentation, allurement or marriage promise.
Voluntary conversions remain allowed.
Intending converts must notify the district magistrate 60 days in advance.
Parents, siblings or close relatives can file complaints.
The burden of proving voluntary conversion lies on the converter.
Penalties: up to 7 years’ imprisonment (10 years for repeat offences).
