On 21 July 2026, Kanishka Narayan (Labour MP from Vale of Glamorgan, Wales) was appointed as the UK’s first Cabinet-level Minister for Artificial Intelligence.
Born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, India, he moved to Cardiff at age 12 and previously served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary for AI and Online Safety.
The new role integrates AI policy, online safety, and digital regulation at the highest level.
The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) was dissolved; its functions merged into Business & Trade and Culture departments.
The UK aims to strengthen its position as a global AI hub.
