The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is observed annually on December 3 to promote the rights, inclusion, and well-being of persons with disabilities (PwDs). Established in 1992 by the UN, the 2025 theme is “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.” India, with 2.68 crore PwDs (Census 2011), has a strong legal and policy framework including the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, Accessible India Campaign, UDID project, PM-DAKSH, and promotion of Indian Sign Language, aiming to ensure equality, accessibility, and social participation for all PwDs.
