International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action was observed on April 4, highlighting the global threat of landmines and explosive remnants of war.
This year’s theme, ‘Invest in Peace; Invest in Mine Action’, emphasizes that peace cannot thrive on unsafe land contaminated by mines and unexploded ordnance.
On average, one person is killed or injured every hour due to explosive hazards, with children being highly vulnerable.
Mine action includes detection and removal of mines, victim assistance, rehabilitation, and policy coordination.
The day was established by the UN General Assembly in 2005 and has been observed annually since 2006.
It promotes global cooperation, funding, and innovation in mine clearance to support post-conflict recovery and development.
