India deposited its Instrument of Acceptance on 20 July 2026, becoming the 123rd WTO member to join the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies.
Adopted in 2022, the agreement prohibits subsidies for illegal, unreported, unregulated fishing and curbs overfishing/overcapacity in marine wild capture.
India seeks 25-year transition for developing countries and protections for small-scale fishers in Phase II.
India’s subsidies are among the lowest globally (~$15 per fisher family).
Agreement entered into force in September 2025.
