Hazaribag district in Jharkhand has been identified as India’s first and only pearl farming cluster by the Government of India. The initiative, led by the fisheries department, aims to promote scientific aquaculture, create employment, and boost rural incomes with special focus on women’s participation.
Women self-help groups are being trained, and an all-women Farmer Producer Organization is proposed. The project integrates pearl farming with cage fish culture at Tilaiya Reservoir for diversified income. Emphasis is on modern techniques, market linkages, and sustainable use of water bodies to establish Hazaribag as a model pearl farming hub.
