  • Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti became the first European woman to take over the command of the International Space Station.
  • She took over from Russia's Oleg Artemyev, who gave her a symbolic key to hand over command. 
  • Cristoforetti will be the fifth European commander of the International Space Station. She began her mission in April 2022.
  • She holds the record for the longest stay in space by a woman after spending 199 days in orbit in 2014 and 2015.
