  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, approved the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 to increase the number of Supreme Court judges by four — from 33 to 37 (excluding the Chief Justice of India).
  • The Bill seeks to amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956. This expansion will help the apex court function more efficiently, reduce pendency, and ensure speedy justice. Salaries and infrastructure costs will be borne by the Consolidated Fund of India. The strength was last increased from 30 to 33 in 2019 under Article 124(1) of the Constitution.
