Bashar al-Assad sentenced to death in absentia

Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus sentenced former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia on 11 August 2026.
Charges: crimes against humanity, war crimes and premeditated murder.
Brother Maher al-Assad also sentenced to death in absentia for murder, torture and incitement to murder.
Both residing in Moscow after the regime collapse on 8 December 2024.
Cousin Atef Najib (former Daraa political security chief) sentenced to death in person for mass killings, torture and protest suppression.
Linked to atrocities during the 14-year civil war (~500,000 deaths, millions displaced).
